Food

There are two types of food in Japan, washoku and youshoku. Washoku is food that originated in Japan in which its sole purpose is to use fresh and the best locally grown traditional Japanese food to put on dishes. Youshoku is directly translated into "western food" mainly coming from countries like America.

Washoku is very particular with how the ingredients are prepared, how they are decorated, and how the ingredients resemble color, shape, and style of the meal. A regular meal would consist of a bowl of rice, some type of soup (misoshiru, osuimono), and one main dish and two side dishes.

A popular youshoku dish is croquette or “Korokke” as the Japanese pronounce. It originated from the French and is shaped like a patty. One can make it by mixing cooked chopped meat, seafood, or vegetables with mashed potato, roll it in breadcrumbs and deep fry until it turns brown. There are many types of Korokke such as Potato Korokke, Meat Korokke, and Tuna Korokke.
